award winning framers
Since our early days we have believed in the benefits gained from qualifications and taking part in framing competitions.
In particular the competitions offer the opportunity to push our creative talents, try new skills and test ourselves against some of the best designers in the country. It is a fine line balancing being creative, enhansing the object being framed while showing off your skill and techniques.
The Guild Commended Framer(GCF) scheme is an international framing qualification administered by The Fine Art Trade Guild. We work to Guild standards and framers at The Eagle Gallery are encouraged to take the examination.
Known as the 'Framing Oscars' the Fine Art Trade Guild(FATG) Awards are the most prestigious in the art industry, and at The Eagle Gallery we have won six.
The FATG competitions are divided into two classes. The Challenge or Set Piece Award is when all entrants recieve the same image to frame. The Creative or Free Thinking Award is where a general theme is given and the framer is free to choose the picture and or objects to be framed.
Since 2004 there has been an additional Award for Best Mount Design. Up to and including 2005 the Creative and Set Piece Awards had run together with the Creative Award being on a related theme to the Set Piece. Since 2006 a single competition has been organised alternating between the two categories.
There are occasional competitions from other organisations, The Picture Business, a trade magazine, in association with Arqadia, trade supplier, has offered a prize for set images. Glass & Mirror, a trade supplier has run competitions to demonstrate the use of advanced glazing materials.

In 1994 The Fine Art Trade Guild instigated the Guild Commended Framer scheme. Designed as a foundation qualification the test covers all the basic framing principles, practical and theoretical, with an emphasis on conservation framing.
From the start The Eagle Gallery has supported the scheme as an excellent grounding for framers. David Wilkie GCF was one of the first to take the test and qualified as GCF 005. A couple of years later after some competition success he was appointed as an examiner to the scheme. Over the years a number of framers at the gallery have been trained and gone on to qualify as Guild Commended Framers. Those that have qualified are:
David Wilkie GCF
Deborah Hide GCF
Tina Critchell GCF
Susan Morphew GCF
Ross Adams GCF
Bibi Ruffler GCF
Peter McIntyre GCF
